Taiwan Trip Day 7 - Tainan (台南) | Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠色隧道)

7 December 2018

Part 3 of Day 7 @ Tainan
1) Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠色隧道)

While planning for our first trip to Tainan, I crossed upon Sicao Green Tunnel (四草綠色隧道) - renowned for its gorgeous green waterway in the dense mangrove forest

I tried to research a little more about Sicao Green Tunnel, but can't seem to get a concrete finding. Mostly indicated that it was a canal constructed two centuries ago for transporting salt and its by products to and fro the drying fields and storage areas.

Popularly known as the 'Little Amazon', it is the enchanting tunnel-like green canopy that won the hearts of many to come and experience it themselves.

Thankfully we planned our route to include Sicao as part of our itinerary where we have engaged a driver to take us there. That saves us the trouble to figure our way there especially since it was our first time to Tainan.

Upon arrival, we proceed to purchase tickets at the ticketing counter. Admission price is NT200 (Adult), NT100 (Child 7 to 12 years old), NT100 (Disabled), NT30 (Infant/Child under 6 years old). Some feel the price is a little steep but I thought it was reasonable for the 30 minutes boat/raft ride tour.

After purchasing the tickets, proceed to the waiting area and queue up to get onto the boat. Thankfully the room is air-conditioned and there were no complains about the long wait. Each ride can take about 30 pax and we watched the safety guideline video while waiting for our turn.

After 20 minutes worth of waiting, we finally got on the boat (with no seats and we have to sit on stools). Put on our life vest and we were lucky enough to get the front seats. That gave us a clear unblocked view of the green tunnel! Keep that in mind to either get the front or back seats for better video or photo taking.

Throughout the ride, there will be a guide talking and sharing with the visitors about the plants and wildlife along the riverbanks. I was too engrossed in taking pictures that I could not focus on what the guide was saying! The picturesque green tunnel took my breath away and I could not help feeling so excited!

As we go deeper, the mangrove trees stretching from both sides of the river banks joined together to form an arch. A beautiful pictorial view especially with the reflection from the waters. Even though it was a hot afternoon, it felt cooler in the green tunnel as the mangrove trees provides shelter from the heat.

Ending point before the boat makes a u-turn back.

While admiring the greenery, keep a look out for the mudskippers, crabs and birds around too! Is that an Egret that we spotted? Fiddler crabs can also be found resting on the sand bags along the riverbank.

After touring Sicao Green Tunnel, you also get a free admission into the Sperm Whale Museum outside of the entrance with your boat ticket. The main highlight is the display of mother and baby whale's skeletons.

There are other specimens on display as well

Dazhong Temple (四草大眾廟) - A majestic temple not far from Sicao Green Tunnel which enshrines the Marshal of the Sea (Dazhong Ye)

It was a wonderful ecotourism ride and we spent about 1 hour to complete before moving on to our next destination.
