Purple & Red Restaurants (紫红冰饮室) | Tan Hiok Nee | Eat In Johor Bahru

We stumbled upon Purple & Red Restaurants (紫红冰饮室) while having a walk at the night market along Jalan Tan Hiok Nee on one evening. It was way past their closing time and the lady shared that she is closing for the day.

Hence, we decided to revisited another day and this time she welcomed us warmly.

Though the name of the shop is Purple & Red Restaurants, the shop space like it's menu is small. Interestingly, their cold drinks are serve in nicely tied plastic bags and the owners took effort to brew out every drink to their customers. Putting lots of mint, lemon to make their drinks more flavourful and refreshing.

I love the little details they put in on their menu and drinks. Like paying attention to the length of the string for easy carrying and drinking.

- Hand Crush Lemon Tea (手打。柠檬茶)

- Natural Hand Bubbing Aiyu Jelly (人工手洗爱玉冻)

- Mojito - non-alcoholic (薄荷。莫吉托)

- Bandung (玫瑰露)

Seating are available on the 2nd floor on the shop and there are hooks on the wall. It is not meant to hook your bags but rather your drinks, leaving more table space (especially helpful with the limited space).

A nice place to rest our feet and have a cooling drink while reminiscing the times where we always have our drinks in plastic bags.

Sekinchan Family Travel - House of Ah Ma (阿嫲的家)

Unlike the city, Sekinchan is a small town and you don't find shopping malls within the vicinity. Hence, an interesting place where we can 'shop' for snacks was House of Ah Ma (阿嫲的家). Even though it is a small provision shop, there are a lot to offer once you step in.

A section of the wooden house is decorated with old wooden vintage furniture. The old appliances and household items brought us back to our childhood days back in the 70s. Our children have not seen most of the items and this is definitely an eye opener.

It is also a perfect spot to take photos against a vintage backdrop.

A nostalgic and old school shop where we found old-time snacks, tidbits and sweets - some that we seen before and some that were new to us.

All items are neatly displayed

Assorted colourful sweets in plastic bottles and tin cans.

Assorted local produce

Apart from local produce, we were delighted to spot that they also sell Kuih Kapit (love letters)! 2 ladies were making some during our visit and it has been a long time since we saw the round iron moulds! Egg batter will be poured onto the mould and placed over the charcoal. This is how traditional love letters are made and how we used to make them when we were younger.

I did not realised that Housse of Ah Ma is actually a bakery too!

House of Ah Ma is a mini tourist spot in Sekinchan. Quiet and down to earth, you can spend about 20-30 minutes here to take some photos and check out the items in the shop.

House of Ah Ma (阿嫲的家)

Address: Jalan Tali Air 5, Pekan Sekinchan, 45400 Sekinchan, Selangor, Malaysia

Malaysia Family Trip - Day 2 (Kuala Lumpur - Sekinchan)

This is a pre-Covid trip that our family had in Dec 2019. Information may have changed but we will like to document our journey down for memories.

======================================================================

Day 2 (Kuala Lumpur - Sekinchan)

Grab Car (KL to Sekinchan) - Homestay (Padi Box) - Cycling - Eagle/Firefly/Blue Tears Tour

After a good night rest, we are so excited to pack for our next destination!

When I was planning for our trip to Sekinchan, I was pretty worried on how to travel there as it was quite far from where we were staying (~95km apart). I wasn't sure then if there are Grab willing to take us there and more importantly to Grab back. After checking in with Padibox, we managed to secure our car ride back to KL and went ahead with our tour plans..

8am - Check out from Homestay

We checked out early and went for breakfast at a prata place near The Robertson.

930am - Grab ride to Sekinchan

We managed to book a grab from our homestay to Sekinchan for RM160. As it was a pretty long ride (1.5hour), make sure you clear your bowels before you hop onto the car!

11am - Homestay in Sekinchan: Padibox

We finally arrived at Padibox and the long ride was WORTH IT! We were welcome with a pretty sight - colourful freight containers surrounded by paddy fields. I was pretty excited while our girl had reservations of the room because she was afraid of insects. Click for more information about Padibox

Cafe in Johor Bahru - Dusk by Mok Mok (Taman Pelangi)

Dusk by Mok Mok is located in Taman Pelangi, Johor Bahru. Hubby and I were waiting for the Pasar Malam (Night Market) which operates on every Tuesday afternoon to open, and we stumbled upon the Cafe by chance. The hammock and decor at the shop front attracted our attention which led us to a pleasant find.

Stepping into the Bohemian-style decorated cafe, we were captivated by the ambiance and furnishing. Every corner feels welcoming and comfortable. A wonderful place to chill and relax - plus good spot for photo taking.

Roast & Coffee - Retro Garden 1968's (Tan Hiok Nee) : Eat In Johor Bahru

Ever since the borders opened and we can start travelling into Johor Bahru, we are back to food hunting! We have passed by Roast & Coffee - Retro Garden a couple of times when we were at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee and their other outlet at Eco Palladium. Finally got the opportunity to sit in for breakfast on our recent trip as we were either too early or it was too crowded.

Roast & Coffee started with a small noodle stall and now it is a modernized kopitiam serving a variety of Nanyang Cuisine and local delights. There are variety of interesting items on their menu and one of them is Coconut Ho Kar Sai - Rich cocoa blended with aroma of coffee and splash of coconut fragrance.

Where to stay in Sekinchan - Padi Box Homes & Cafe

Pre-covid Travel Post

We knew we wanted to spend a night at Sekinchan and Padi Box strikes out as our top choice because of availability, cost and experience.

Location

Located in Sekinchan about 95km for Kuala Lumpur City Center, it took us about 1.5 hours to reach by car. We called a Grab from our homestay in KL to take us to Sekinchan - Cost: RM160

Bicycle rentals, activities and tours (Sky Mirror, Fireflies & Eagle Feeding etc) are available for booking through Padi Box as well. Check out their website for more information and booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

A modest homestay that is not fancy and down to earth. A short getaway from the crowd and noise from the buzzling city, Waking up to the scent of the grass, sounds of nature and welcomed by blue sky and green fields.

Malaysia Family Trip - Day 1 (Singapore to Kuala Lumpur)

This is a pre-Covid trip that our family had in Dec 2019. Information may have changed but we will like to document our journey down for memories.

======================================================================

Day 1 (Singapore - Kuala Lumpur)

Bus Coach (SG to KL) - Breakfast @ RedDrip Baking Café (closed) - Batu Caves - Nasi Lemak Lunch @ Village Park Restaurant - Homestay (The Robertson) - Berjaya Times Square

We took a night ride from Singapore (~1130pm) and reached Kuala Lumpur - Berjaya Times Square in the early morning (before 5am)

11pm - Singapore

There are pros and cons on taking night rides. It is more time saving if we travel through the night but we had to deal with waiting upon arriving early. Thankfully, there is a breakfast spot nearby and we had an early breakfast at Hometown Hainan Bread & Egg while waiting for time to pass.

Chuan Chuan Le 川串乐 - A taste of Szechuan

It was a Saturday night and we were looking out for a place to have our family dinner together. By chance, we stepped into Chuan Chuan Le 川串乐 at Jalan Besar and was delighted to see a good variety of food on its menu comprising of BBQ skewers, traditional sze chuan mala dishes, stir fry, soup, staple food, cold dishes, Chef's Special etc.

We ordered some BBQ skewers and other dishes to try and was pleasantly surprised by the flavour and taste of the food that were served.

Chuan Chuan Le has assorted BBQ Skewers with price from $1 onwards. We ordered pork belly, beef, sausage and mantou. Thankfully they served sausages and not hotdogs which we had at another restaurant. The meat are nicely marinated that is not over empowering or spicy. It was just nice for our palates.

All meat on the skewers were already cooked and only placed on the plate with a small candle fire beneath to keep them warm.

Kway Teow Kia @ Restoran Rong Shu Xia (榕树下粿条仔) - Pelangi: Eat In Johor Bahru

We love to have Kway Teow Kia whenever we are in Johor Bahru. In Singapore, its known as Kway Chap and we prefer the flavour and taste here though. After the borders opened and when we start to revisit our favourite stall, it suddenly daunt onto me that I have not post about this foodie spot for Kway Teow Kia!

Restoran Rong Shu Xia has been around for many years and when we first visited, the stall (near Plaza Pelangi) is under a big Banyan tree. Now it has expanded into not one but 2 shop space due to its popularity.

Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih (阿嬷潮州糕) - Tan Hiok Nee: Eat In Johor Bahru

It feels good to be back on our food hunt in JB. There are many good cafes and eateries in Tan Hiok Nee and one of such breakfast place is Ah Ma TeoChew Kuih. Was warmly welcomed in and introduced to the varies homemade kueh inspired by their Ah Ma's special recipes that have been handed down to the fourth generation.

Stepping in to the 2 storey shophouse, mimic the setting of an old school coffee shop giving a nostalgic atmosphere. More seating at level 2.

Fun In JB - Love Fun Baking House (爱烘焙聚乐部)

It feels good to be able to drive in to Johor Bahru once again after a 2 years hiatus. However, the pandemic has also caused so much stress and disruptions to the local businesses that many could not sustain and has to close shop.

Love Fun Baking House has been our kiddos' favourite place to go whenever we are in JB and we have spent many years having our fun bakes there since 2017

https://bpdgtravels.blogspot.com/2017/02/diy-baking-love-fun-baking-house-mount.html

With the crunch from Covid, Love Fun Baking House has now moved to Taman Johor Jaya. Though the space is smaller than before, the warmth from the staff still remains. Many of our Fun in JB places have closed and kudos to 爱烘焙聚乐部 for holding on through the past 5 years. We will be back for more bakes in the near future.

It feels good to be BACK in Johor Bahru after 2 years! We have missed driving in and visiting our favourite breakfast place in Tan Hiok Nee - Kin Wah Coffeeshop . We have been their faithful patrons for the past 8 years and it has been a place where our children spent half of their growing up years tasting the local traditional breakfast.

Where to Stay in Kuala Lumpur - The Robertson

Pre-Covid Travel Post

Before the pandemic hits, we were lucky to be on a short trip to Malaysia and stayed in Kuala Lumpur. Finally decided to pen down our trip as for memory sake and maybe future travel reference as the doors to travelling is opening and made possible.

Real Thai Singapore - Economic One-stop Dining Experience

It has been ages since we have been to Changi City Point and we were looking out for affordable dining options. Was delighted to spot Real Thai located at the Basement level which serves a variety of set meals and you can also create your own customized set option.
